On sale by June 1915 as a 1916 model, the Chevrolet "Four-Ninety" was named for its initial price, $ 490, although, when properly equipped, it cost between $ 550-750. Shortly after its release rival Ford reduced the price of their Model T from $ 490 to $ 440. This in turn prompted Chevrolet to offer the 490 for $ 490 fully equipped, a price it was unable to honor because it was unprofitable.
